Nettie Jewel Washington, beloved wife of Douglas Washington, passed away peacefully at Connecticut Hospice on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 after a long and courageous five year battle with breast cancer.
Nettie was born March 24, 1944 in Eufaula Alabama. She attended Alabama A&M University and Gateway Community College, earning her degree in Elementary Education. She was employed as a Special Education Paraprofessional for the Hamden Board of Education. Prior to working in the school system, she owned and operated "Sharing and Caring" day care center.
Nettie was an active member of Community Baptist Church, where she served as a dedicated Usher and participated in numerous ministries. She loved listening to music, laughing, gardening, reading, being with family, and spending time with her grandchildren. She will forever be remembered by her loving sisters Mary Nell Williams and Carolyn Warren, beloved children Curtis T. Hill, Kimberly Washington and Tyrone Washington Jr., treasured grandchildren Anthony, Ashley, Crystal and Curtis Jr., and daughter-in-law Norma Hill. She was predeceased by her parents, Rosa Mae Hill and Robert Jordan, infant son, Michael Washington, and her dear brother, Billie Ray Hill.
Nettie touched the lives of many people with her generosity and kindness, and maintained her trademark smile all the way to the end. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Susan G. Komen (www.komenct.org) or the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org).
